Hobart Brickies fell to the Valparaiso Vikings 49–39 in an IHSAA Class 4A Sectional 2 boys basketball semifinal.
The game was played last Friday, March 6 at Chesterton High School.
The Brickies showed grit on both ends, edging VHS in assists with 11 to 9, and connecting more efficiently from beyond the arc at 29 percent compared to the Vikings’ 22 percent. Their ball movement created opportunities, but shooting struggles overall, just 36 percent from the field and 42 percent at the free-throw line, limited their scoring punch.
Defensively, Hobart forced some tough looks but couldn’t match Valparaiso’s disruptive play, finishing with only 5 steals and no blocks against the Vikings’ 10 steals and 4 rejections. Rebounding was nearly even, with Hobart pulling down 29 boards to Valparaiso’s 30, underscoring the tight battle in the paint.
Hobart High School beat Valparaiso by 11 points in their February head-to-head, but Friday’s rematch ended in a 10-point loss to the Vikings. Despite the loss, Hobart’s resilience and passing game stood out, keeping them competitive throughout. The Vikings’ strengths were evident in their crisp ball movement and perimeter shooting. Those qualities point to a team identity built on sharing the ball and stretching defenses.
