Hobart girls basketball held off Wheeler 40-39 in a tightly contested nonconference girls basketball game, pulling out a one-point victory in the final minutes.
The game was played Jan. 27 at Hobart High School, where the Brickies defended their home floor in a back-and-forth matchup that remained within one possession for most of the fourth quarter.
Hobart relied on balanced scoring and strong rebounding to secure the win, finishing with a 48-26 advantage on the glass. Riley Weber led the effort inside with eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds, while Zaria Gildon added six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kurah Krucina contributed eight points and four rebounds, and S. Stankich finished with seven points and eight boards as the Brickies consistently created second-chance opportunities.
The game came down to execution in the closing moments, as Hobart limited Wheeler to one field goal over the final stretch and forced a contested shot on the final possession to preserve the victory. Defensively, the Brickies recorded seven steals and one block, helping disrupt Wheeler’s rhythm and prevent late scoring runs.
Freshman Taryn Babcock added five points on perfect shooting, while Aalliah Otero and Chesnie Unland each contributed on the boards and in transition to round out a complete team effort.
Up next, Hobart will host an opponent to be determined on Feb. 6 with a 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
