Hobart opened the sectional with authority Tuesday night, defeating Portage 9–3 to advance in postseason play.
The Brickies broke open a tight game with a six‑run fifth inning, riding timely hitting and steady defense to secure the victory on May 26.
Junior Aurora Ciesielski was a force at the plate, going 3‑for‑4 with two RBIs, including a double that fueled Hobart’s decisive rally. Freshman Alexis Coons added power to the lineup, finishing 1‑for‑2 with a home run, two RBIs, and two walks, keeping Portage’s pitching staff under constant pressure. Senior Samantha Stankich and junior Addi Gaffin chipped in RBIs, while senior Sierra Teel contributed a clutch hit and drove in a run.
Defensively, the Brickies were anchored by junior Nora Hornak, who earned recognition as Defensive Player of the Game. Hornak’s work at shortstop was pivotal, as she handled multiple tough chances cleanly and made several game‑saving plays to halt Portage rallies.
In the circle, Ciesielski also delivered, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out two. Hobart’s balanced effort—highlighted by offensive firepower, defensive composure, and reliable pitching—propelled the Brickies to a convincing sectional round one win and momentum heading deeper into the tournament.
