Josh Diaz closed out his senior season with a 34-6 record, highlighting a successful final year for the Hobart wrestling program at 285 pounds.
Diaz competed for Hobart during the IHSAA state tournament series, advancing through the sectional and regional rounds before the semi-state was held Feb. 14 at East Chicago Central High School.
The Brickies senior captured both the sectional and regional titles at heavyweight to continue his postseason run. Diaz recorded several key victories throughout the year, including wins over Lake Central’s Jake Luedtke and South Bend Riley’s Da’mon Stearns. During the state tournament series, he earned pins against Merrillville’s Austen Vander Woude and Andrean’s Deshawn Jackson before adding a 7-0 decision over Penn’s Jonathan Searfoss in the semi-state round.
Diaz also finished fifth at the prestigious Al Smith Invitational during the regular season while competing against many of the top heavyweights in the state. His performance throughout the year helped him climb into the top 10 of the state rankings at 285 pounds.
Diaz finished his senior campaign ranked ninth in Indiana and leaves the Hobart program as a sectional and regional champion in the heavyweight division.
