Hobart earned a 49-44 victory over Wheeler in a nonconference boys basketball matchup.
The game was played Jan. 13 at Wheeler High School, as the Brickies improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in road games this season.
Hobart leaned on a balanced effort led by senior Ryan Basham, who entered the game averaging 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest and continued to anchor the Brickies on both ends of the floor. Jordan Johnson controlled the tempo, providing playmaking and defensive pressure, as Hobart forced turnovers and limited Wheeler’s transition opportunities. The Brickies also held an edge on the glass, coming in averaging nearly 28 rebounds per game, and used that physicality to generate extra possessions.
Hobart’s defense, which averages more than 13 steals per game, helped disrupt Wheeler’s offense and protect the narrow lead down the stretch. The Brickies’ ability to execute in half-court sets and finish key possessions proved decisive in a game that stayed within two possessions throughout the second half.
Up next, Hobart hosts Munster on Jan. 23 in a Northwest Crossroads Conference matchup scheduled for 7 p.m.
The two teams last met Jan. 24, when Munster defeated Hobart 67-52.
