Hobart High School’s football team faces a challenging start to its season, opening against larger schools Chesterton and Portage. These teams have established traditions in the sport.
Head coach Eric Schreiber said that this approach is rooted in history. “This goes back to Coach Seec’s foundation,” Schreiber said. “We want to compete against the best teams in the area. Bigger, faster, stronger opponents prepare us for the playoffs.”
According to Schreiber, these early-season tests are significant. “It’s about seeing that speed and physicality,” he said. “It makes us better for conference play. That’s the goal.” He noted that Portage will present a particular challenge due to their returning talent. “They only had five seniors last year, so they return a lot,” Schreiber added. “They’ll be really talented and ready to play.”
Senior player Logan Peters expressed enthusiasm for these matchups. “We want teams to remember us,” he said. “We’ll be ready to show them who we are.”
