Hobart girls tennis delivered a thrilling postseason run, capped by a sectional championship performance that will be remembered for years.
The match was played on Thursday, May 21, at the Hobart Tennis Complex.
In the semifinals, the Lady Brickies faced arch rival Andrean and battled through a tense contest. Sophomore Evelyn Gonzalez secured a win at #3 singles, while junior Kendall Cadena and sophomore Abigail Rinas claimed victory at #2 doubles to put Hobart within one point of advancing. Andrean answered with wins at #1 and #2 singles, tying the match at 2–2 and leaving the outcome to the #1 doubles showdown. Freshmen Ava Richter and Chase Mitchell rose to the moment, taking the first set 6–4, dropping the second 4–6, and then rallying in a decisive third‑set tiebreaker. With the season on the line, the duo closed out the match to send Hobart into the championship round.
The Brickies then squared off with Merrillville for the sectional championship, with the title hanging in the balance. Seniors Emily Cicillian and Leilani Venegas set the tone at #1 and #2 singles, and Hobart swept all five positions for a commanding 5–0 victory.
With the win, the Lady Brickies captured their first sectional crown since 2021 and the 10th in program history, securing the 2026 IHSAA Sectional Championship.
